DIY Mirror Candle Holder

Hello my friend, welcome back!!
I have always been fascinated by mirrors, and candles and the
combination of the two just takes my breath away.....
Today I'll show you how I made this Mirror Candle Holder....

Mirror Candle Holder

I used the following material:
  1.  5" round mirror
  2. Turquoise teardrop rhinestones
  3. Yellow flower-shaped rhinestones
  4. Pearls- small and big
  5. Glass votive holder
  6. Glue (forgot to keep it in the picture)

Materials

The process was not as complex as it looks.....
I decided on the layout and then glued the rhinestones, pearls and
the votive holder on the mirror base......
And this is the result.....

And this is how it looks serving its purpose....

A little more Diwali

Hi….I hope you had a lovely Diwali….
In my last post “Diwali Decorations 2013”, I told you about how I made some stuff to make our Diwali a little extra special…..Today I’ll tell you about some articles I made last year for my Diwali workshop…..I had conducted my first Diwali workshop for kids and adults, where we made a bunch of items, about which I’ll tell you now….

Every Diwali begins with the installation of an “Akash-Kandil” or a lantern as we call it…..So, we started by making a lantern…We used handmade paper which was quite translucent…..We cut it according to our template, and then assembled it….We left an opening on top for passing a lightbulb in it…..We also stuck small shiny punched flower on each piece…..This was the final product…..

Paper Lantern

And, this is how it looked when it was lit….

Akash Kandil

We then proceeded to our Rangoli…..Rangoli is traditionally used to adorn the doorstep, as it is considered very auspicious….It was traditionally done with rice flour and some natural dyes…But, with the availability of various commercially available colored powders, rangoli has become an art……What we made in our workshop was a rangoli with a twist…..We made a permanent rangoli using some cardboard, Rainbow/ Iris paper and some rhinestones……We made a 6 piece rangoli which can be used in various ways……This was our fruit of labor…..

Rangoli

Then, we started with our “Toran” aka garland…..We used a gold ribbon, construction paper, rhinestones, 3D glitter and key rings to make our Toran…..We made leaves and flowers and glued them alternately on the ribbon and put key rings on either ends to hang them……This is how our Toran looked…..

Flower Garland

Toran

Finally we moved on to the last item in our workshop, the integral part of Diwali- a “Diya” or the Lamp…..Rows of oil lamps are lit and placed outside the doors and windows during Diwali….How could we forget those….I gave a choice of two designs to my class and each participant made one as per their liking….We used paper, terracotta lamps and acrylic colors to make these….This is how they turned out…..

Festive Diya
Hand-painted Diya
And, this is the whole package!!

Hope you had a good time reading about this…..Don’t forget to let me know your opinions and feel free to contact me through the comment box if you have any questions…..Till then, keep crafting and come back soon for more !!!

This and That !!!

Today, I was just browsing through my old photos.....and look what I found!!!!
I didn't even remember I had these photos!!!!!
These are some things I made quite some time back.....
I had totally forgotten about them.....I was just uploading what
I was making recently......
I think I should keep digging into my old photos often.....
The reason I put all these photos together because, I did not have the
'in- progress' pictures.....
Here are some things I made......
Look, Enjoy and have Fun!!!!

This is a coffee table I decorated for my sons 3rd birthday....We cut a
cake on this table :)

Decorated Coffee Table

This is how I used candles on the cake (Cake Topper) for the same birthday......
Yes, It was a Spiderman theme.......
I just use one of my sons toy figurine in front of the candles......
My son loved it!!!!

Cake Topper

This is made on a refrigerator door using a Sticker Making Kit from
Fevicryl (India)...I think this product is discontinued now......
I made this about 6 years back, and it still looks like new :)

Sticker Art

This was the First Floral Arrangement I did during a festival at home....
It turned out to be gorgeous........I had never thought I could do this....

Floral Arrangement

This is a glass votive holder I had made using glass colors......

This is a vertical Note-Pad that I made.....
It is covered with textured paper and I have made a freehand design of
a necklace on it.....The photo is not so good, as my camera was really
not a good one :(

Decorative Note- Pad

This is a pot lamp I made during Diwali a few years back.....
Usually, its filled with wax and turned into a candle, but I preferred to
keep it empty and as a show piece at that time.......

These are a few clips and a ring I made using floral wire and nylon stockings.....
I gifted them to my little girl-friends :)
Stocking Flowers

This is a vase I painted....I had to show a sample for an order and I used this
vase.....I gave the vase a silver base coat and then I painted 3 different motifs
on the same vase.....

This is a Madhubani border on the vase......

DIY Kids Nursery Wall Art

Hi.....
I am a newbie to the "blog" world, having entered the scene only a few months back,
and still learning......
But, I am not new to making something beautiful.....
This applies to my crafts, but also to my little angel whom I "made" almost 6 years back..... :)
I was just browsing through his baby photos when I came accross this one....
How time flies!!!....I had even forgotten about this.....as the room looks so different after the renovations we did few years back....
Anyways, I wanted my son to enjoy his early life looking at something pretty....
Don't all moms think so???
Well, I decided to do something that would not take much time...you know how a newborn keeps the mommy on her toes!!!
I soooo wanted to paint the wall :(
But, the time crunch made me use another option.....paper decoupage!!!
With help(lots!!!)  from my little sister, I was able to finish this in two days..
( the two hour nap break, once a day :O)
My sister and I drew free- hand  figures of  Pooh, Tigger and Piglet on florescent paper to make them look more brighter and vibrant.....
Surprisingly, Piglet was the toughest to draw....I just couldn't get his "Happy Face" right
:(  .....But, persistence always pays and finally I got Piglet as I've always known him...happy and adorable :) He still is my favorite ........

Kids Nursery Wall Art

We cut the figures across their outlines and finished them with some poster colors
and a black marker.....
I also folded a long strip ( made by joining a few smaller strips) of green paper and cut it to look like grass.....Some leftover paper from Piglet, got transformed into a few gorgeous flowers.....
I wanted the trio to look as if they were playing in a garden.....but that scene somehow looked a bit empty.....
Then, I thought of giving them some balloons to play, to fill up the area.....
Suddenly, an idea struck.....Why not make this a picture wall???
We first glued the grass and then glued Pooh, Tigger and Piglet.....
After that, we glued down the flowers, the balloon strings and the balloons.....
The bright balloons became the base for the baby pictures.....
We glued the baby pictures and then, put a fancy printed fabric border around them.....
My nursery mural was now complete....
My baby couldn't take his eyes off the wall for a long time.....
That told me- Mission Accomplished !!!!
There we were....a happy mom and a very happy baby.....
I have blurred the pictures for privacy reasons.....Sorry about that!!!
Hope you enjoyed the post.....I had fun going back to those memories again......
Have fun and thanks for visiting :)

DIY Instant Wall Art- 2

Hello and welcome to view my Instant Wall Art-2....
I call it so because a few days back, I uploaded a post on Instant Wall art- Shoebox Lid Upcycling.....You can see the post by clicking here.
I made this wall art in a similar fashion using a shoe box lid and a scrapbook paper.

Instant Wall Art- Shoe box Lid Upcycling
This is the shoe box Lid I used for this wall art....

Shoe box Lid
This wall art is little different by accident!!! Funny Story :)....
Let me tell you.....
The scrapbook paper comes in a specific size and it fit my earlier shoebox lid perfectly....
However, this lid belonged to my beloved hubby's shoebox......it was a huge box!!!
It had to be....These were the shoes!!!!

So imagine my despair when the paper kept falling short from all sides......
After racking my brains for quite some time, I still couldn't make it fit.....I thought of using two pieces of scrapbook paper, but I wasn't feeling very happy about the idea...... But, I was not ready to give up.....
And then, out of nowhere an idea struck!!!
I decided to give the frame a boxed look.....( a box for a box....lol)......
I cut the paper in a way that it fit on the box, leaving an uniform border all around.....

Scrapbooking Paper

Then I painted the border with black color.......
See how it looks here......

When the color dried completely, I glued the paper on to the box lid........
It turned out like this!!!

Shoe box Upcycling
Here's how it looks on the wall :)
The black border gives it a look of certain depth, which is what I like about this wall art....

Instant Wall Art

The beauty of this wall art is in its uniform design.....which gives me the flexibility to hang it any way I like.....It looks good horizontally, and equally good vertically!!! Ain't that awesome???It is, right???

I used scrapbook paper here, but you can use any gift wrapping paper with a uniform design too!!!
Hope you liked this......

I will be posting more stuff soon, so do keep coming back.....

DIY Rose Branches

Roses are a crafters favorite!!!!
And I am no exception to that....
I made this Rose Branch Decorative Piece at a very low price :)
Let me tell you how.....

Rose Branches

I collected some branches that fell from a tree outside my house.....
The photo shows only two but there were some more....

Branches

I chose the best of the branches and got out my ammunition.....a spray can!!

I spray painted the branches gold.......ohh I love shiny, blingy stuff!!!
I loved the way they turned out :)

Gold Painted branches

When the branches were drying, I made some paper roses of different sizes....
Here they are!!!

Paper Roses

You can use ready artificial / silk flowers like these too....

I stuck the roses randomly on the branches with a hot glue gun....

Then, I took a glass vase and filled it with glass fillers for the base.....

Finally, I arranged the branches together in the vase....
This is how the final product looks....
It gives a very chic look to the house at a very minimal cost....

Chic Decor

This is a close up of a rose stuck on the branch.....

Some more snaps that I took are here.....
Hope you enjoyed....

DIY Quick Rock Paperweight

Hi....
How often are you frazzled by the papers flying all over from your desk...right?
I am one of them.....My kid gets all these flyers from school which pile up on the table....
They kept getting knocked, and were falling all over the place.....That is when I felt the urgent need for a paperweight.....Thus, my Quick Rock Paperweight was born ;)
What best to hold down papers than a fairly good sized rock???
Ya, right!! ....So, I took a medium sized rock from my storage and painted it white.....
I was pondering over what design to paint when I saw one of my son's tattoos lying around....I liked this butterfly instantly :)
When the color on the rock was dry, I applied the tattoo to the rock and left it to dry for a couple of minutes....
When it dried it looked like this:

Quick Rock Paperweight

Finally, I gave it a coat of sealer to lock in the tattoo....
It looks cool on my desk now....I love this project of mine...
Though it was instant, it turned out to be a beauty.....
I sometimes, also use it as a part of table decor..

I hope you liked it.....

Diwali Decorations

Diwali was celebrated last week, and we had lots of fun at home.....
Celebrating Diwali in US is a different experience altogether, but we tried to bring in
the spirit home, at our level best....
And, what is Diwali without its decorations???
Let me show you what I did....
Traditionally, clay lamps filled with oil line the doors and windows during the festival...
The picture below is a "Diya" ( Lamp) hand painted by me on our glass door....
This is how the painted surface looks.....its the inside!!

Diya Painting on the Door

And, this is how it looks to a person watching it from outside :)

Diya Painting

Marigold "Toran" ( string garland) is also traditionally put on the main entrance
with 5 mango leaves in the centre....
You know how impossible it is to find one such 'Toran' in US :(
So, I decided to paint one instead.....
This is how it looks from inside......

Marigold Toran Painting

And, this is the outside view......

Hand Painted Toran

This is how the whole combo looks on the door......

Diwali Decoration

What is Diwali without some diyas right???
I had a terracotta plate with me which I painted golden....
Then I placed a LED candle on it....
Thus I made my American Diya :))
The main reason for making this one was my 5 year old whose 'active' presence made it impossible for me to light any real diyas !!
But the effect was so nice!!!

Decorative Diya

This is another assembly.....
The base is metal with rhinestones which I had bought from India......
Just painted the top of a LED candle and put it in the base to make this Diya....

Fancy Diya

One more type of assembly is the one I made below...
I have placed hand painted terra-cotta diyas in a row with LED candles on top.....
I know there are too many diyas.....but 'Diwali' literally means 'Row of Lights'.....

This is a floating diya handmade by me.....
It has a metal centre and is decorated with green and red festive colored rhinestones.....
Its usually used with a votive.....
I gifted this to a friend for Diwali....

Floating Diya

Hope you enjoyed viewing my decoration and diyas......
Happy Diwali to you and your family....
Comment below if you liked the decorations and Thanks for visiting :)
