Diwali 2014

Happy Diwali and a Happy New Year my dear friend...
Hope you had a very fun filled Diwali this year...
I had so much fun decorating and beautifying my house for Diwali this year...
Let me walk you through how I decorated my house for this festive season....

This was my center table decor...

Diwali decor

This was a small floral arrangement with a floating LED diya....

Floating diya

I tried something different with a diya this time...I painted a big diya and instead of just putting a tea light inside, I lit a tea light inside a mosaic glass, which I then put inside the diya....The light filtered through the colored mosaic casting its glow on the whole interior of the diya...I loved the dramatic effect this combination gave....What do you think?

I also made this string lantern for this Diwali...I kinda wanted to make a non traditional 'Kandil' this year.....So, I experimented with this technique and it came out beautifully.....
I filled it up with battery operated string lights and hung it outside my front door...
Not bad for the first time, eh?....Will be posting the tutorial soon....

String Lantern

I was so pumped up after seeing the result of the Kandil, that I thought of making votive holders too...
These are those two string votive holders that I made for the first time....Glad to see how they turned out :)

String votive holders

Finding rangoli is next to impossible in the US, so I made these two rangoli's, one out of foam and the other out of a wooden (MDF) board, both of which I had on hand....I'll post the tutorials for these two rangoli's very soon....So , keep visiting !!

Rangoli

I also put some LED lights in small diyas and lined them up on the stairs....Cute, huh ?

This is a readymade marigold Toran I put up outside my front door....

Hope you liked my Diwali decor....If you make something like this, please don't forget to mention and link this post....And, feel free to share your pictures in my comment box....
Thanks for visiting...see you again soon....

DIY Mirror Candle Holder

Hello my friend, welcome back!!
I have always been fascinated by mirrors, and candles and the
combination of the two just takes my breath away.....
Today I'll show you how I made this Mirror Candle Holder....

Mirror Candle Holder

I used the following material:
  1.  5" round mirror
  2. Turquoise teardrop rhinestones
  3. Yellow flower-shaped rhinestones
  4. Pearls- small and big
  5. Glass votive holder
  6. Glue (forgot to keep it in the picture)

Materials

The process was not as complex as it looks.....
I decided on the layout and then glued the rhinestones, pearls and
the votive holder on the mirror base......
And this is the result.....

And this is how it looks serving its purpose....

This and That !!!

Today, I was just browsing through my old photos.....and look what I found!!!!
I didn't even remember I had these photos!!!!!
These are some things I made quite some time back.....
I had totally forgotten about them.....I was just uploading what
I was making recently......
I think I should keep digging into my old photos often.....
The reason I put all these photos together because, I did not have the
'in- progress' pictures.....
Here are some things I made......
Look, Enjoy and have Fun!!!!

This is a coffee table I decorated for my sons 3rd birthday....We cut a
cake on this table :)

Decorated Coffee Table

This is how I used candles on the cake (Cake Topper) for the same birthday......
Yes, It was a Spiderman theme.......
I just use one of my sons toy figurine in front of the candles......
My son loved it!!!!

Cake Topper

This is made on a refrigerator door using a Sticker Making Kit from
Fevicryl (India)...I think this product is discontinued now......
I made this about 6 years back, and it still looks like new :)

Sticker Art

This was the First Floral Arrangement I did during a festival at home....
It turned out to be gorgeous........I had never thought I could do this....

Floral Arrangement

This is a glass votive holder I had made using glass colors......

Glass Votive Holder

This is a vertical Note-Pad that I made.....
It is covered with textured paper and I have made a freehand design of
a necklace on it.....The photo is not so good, as my camera was really
not a good one :(

Decorative Note- Pad

This is a pot lamp I made during Diwali a few years back.....
Usually, its filled with wax and turned into a candle, but I preferred to
keep it empty and as a show piece at that time.......

These are a few clips and a ring I made using floral wire and nylon stockings.....
I gifted them to my little girl-friends :)
Stocking Flowers

This is a vase I painted....I had to show a sample for an order and I used this
vase.....I gave the vase a silver base coat and then I painted 3 different motifs
on the same vase.....

This is a Madhubani border on the vase......

This is a design made with a hand-made stamp.......

Diwali Decorations

Diwali was celebrated last week, and we had lots of fun at home.....
Celebrating Diwali in US is a different experience altogether, but we tried to bring in
the spirit home, at our level best....
And, what is Diwali without its decorations???
Let me show you what I did....
Traditionally, clay lamps filled with oil line the doors and windows during the festival...
The picture below is a "Diya" ( Lamp) hand painted by me on our glass door....
This is how the painted surface looks.....its the inside!!

Diya Painting on the Door

And, this is how it looks to a person watching it from outside :)

Diya Painting

Marigold "Toran" ( string garland) is also traditionally put on the main entrance
with 5 mango leaves in the centre....
You know how impossible it is to find one such 'Toran' in US :(
So, I decided to paint one instead.....
This is how it looks from inside......

Marigold Toran Painting

And, this is the outside view......

Hand Painted Toran

This is how the whole combo looks on the door......

Diwali Decoration

What is Diwali without some diyas right???
I had a terracotta plate with me which I painted golden....
Then I placed a LED candle on it....
Thus I made my American Diya :))
The main reason for making this one was my 5 year old whose 'active' presence made it impossible for me to light any real diyas !!
But the effect was so nice!!!

Decorative Diya

This is another assembly.....
The base is metal with rhinestones which I had bought from India......
Just painted the top of a LED candle and put it in the base to make this Diya....

Fancy Diya

One more type of assembly is the one I made below...
I have placed hand painted terra-cotta diyas in a row with LED candles on top.....
I know there are too many diyas.....but 'Diwali' literally means 'Row of Lights'.....

This is a floating diya handmade by me.....
It has a metal centre and is decorated with green and red festive colored rhinestones.....
Its usually used with a votive.....
I gifted this to a friend for Diwali....

Hope you enjoyed viewing my decoration and diyas......
Happy Diwali to you and your family....

DIY Halloween Pumpkin Decoration

Hi and welcome to my post on Halloween Pumpkin Decoration....
My son had to take a decorated pumpkin in his school....
So we made this pumpkin....
However, Hurricane Sandy ruined our plans and our poor pumpkin had to stay home :(

Halloween Pumpkin Decoration

For making this, we chose a foam pumpkin instead of a real one as it was easy for my son to handle...
My son decided to go with a skull face for pumpkin.....so, I painted a skull.....
My son also wanted the scary triangle eyes for the skull....
According to him, the skull looks more spooky with these eyes!!
Then we glued a rubber bat, rat and a spider for a more spooky appearance....
Last but not the least, we carved the bottom and fixed a LED candle to give our pumpkin an eerie flickering glow!!!

My son was pretty excited with the final outcome and he couldn't wait to show it to his fellow kindergarteners!!!!
Hope you liked it too....
If you do, be sure leave a comment below and 'like' my blog.

DIY Decorative Table Centerpiece

Hi and welcome.....
Today I would like to tell you how I made a Decorative Table Centerpiece......
I am a big fan of Recycling.....Its amazing how a little effort on our side can make a huge
 difference in saving our planet.....
I made the flower in this picture using the bottom of a water gallon....
I used acrylic colors for painting this flower.......

Recycled Flower
But the lonely flower did not serve any purpose, so I decided to make something useful from it....

Decorative Table Centerpiece
I had a decorative plate with me, which I used as the base.....
To it, I added a few glass fillers in the center.......
And then, I placed the flower in the center of the fillers......

Recycled Flower Centerpiece
To add to the glamor, I added a LED candle in the center of the flower......

My Centerpiece was thus completed, and now it sits on my dining table, casting a soft
glow of happiness :)

I hope you liked the Tutorial ......Have fun trying it yourself !!
